Luckily, there are ways to get rid of the smell and restore your couch back to its original condition. Read on for more information on how to get rid of dog pee smell from couches and other surfaces.
What to do if your couch smells like dog pee
If your dog has urinated on your couch, there is a good chance that the smell will stay with the fabric for a while. To get rid of the urine smell from your upholstery, try one of the methods we offered in this article.
Before everything: Wash the removable items
You’ll want to start by taking the couch cover off and washing it in hot water with detergent. Next, take the cushions and pillows off and wash them also in hot water with detergent. Finally, take the fabric of the couch itself and wash it in the washing machine. Once all of the items are clean, dry them off thoroughly,
Method #1 – Baking Soda
1. Make sure to vacuum the couch to remove any pet hair and debris.
2. Mix one cup of baking soda with two gallons of water and spray the solution on the couch. Let it sit for an hour, then vacuum the area.
3. Cover the couch with furniture protectors or a large piece of fabric to prevent future accidents.
Method #2 – Water and Alcohol
1. Pour a pot of boiling water onto the stain and let it sit for a few minutes. This will cause the pee to break down and the smell to dissipate.
2. Rubbing alcohol onto a cloth and then airing it out for a few hours will help remove the smell.
Method #3 – Enzymatic Cleaners
If you want to get rid of the dog pee smell from your couch, enzymatic cleaners may be your best bet. These cleaners use enzymes to break down the compounds that cause smells, and they’re safe for both humans and pets.
Simply mix a solution of two tablespoons of enzyme cleaner with one quart of water, and spray it onto the stain. Blot it dry with a cloth, and let the couch air out for a few days.
Method #4 – Vinegar
Pour a small amount of white vinegar onto a cloth or paper towel and spread the vinegar around the area where the dog’s pee is. Let the vinegar sit for about an hour, then vacuum up the vinegar and debris.
Method #5 – Hydrogen Peroxide
For this method, you will want to use a ratio of 1 part hydrogen peroxide to 3 parts water. You can adjust the ratios depending on how strong of a smell you want to remove. To clean the couch, pour the hydrogen peroxide solution onto the couch and let it sit for 30 minutes.
After 30 minutes, wash the couch with regular soap and water. Make sure to rinse off all the hydrogen peroxide solution before you put the couch back in place. If you notice that the smell is still lingering, you can repeat the process of cleaning with hydrogen peroxide and water until the smell is gone.
Method #6 – Listerine
Pour 1 cup of Listerine into a spray bottle and fill it with water. Shake well before using. Spray the mixture onto the couch and let it sit for at least 30 minutes. Wipe down the area with a cloth afterward to remove any residual smell. If this doesn’t work, you may need to purchase a pet odor eliminator.
Finally, make sure to disinfect any surfaces that were directly exposed to urine (like floors) as well as areas where there is potential for future accidents by keeping pet barriers in place.
If the smell is more pervasive, you may want to consider getting a new couch.
